Gramado’s central square is named after the 1st local Sub-Intendent, Major Nicoletti, who was responsible for Gramado’s current location when he established the District’s headquarters in 1913. Inaugurated in 1936 and remodeled in 2003, the Major Nicoletti Square is usually crowded with tourists who elect the square to take many pictures – since it has a privileged view of four other tourist spots: the Main Church of São Pedro, the Festivals Palace, the Covered Street, and the Borges de Medeiros Avenue.
As the place is public and open it is always busy. A bandstand serves as a commercial spot for the sale of products with the brand “Gramado Inesquecível”, the city’s official brand. A few meters away – still in the square – is the tourist information center and the public restrooms. A fountain, flower beds, trees, benches, and lamps adorn the entire extension of the square, which usually receives a thematic decoration for each new event that takes place during the year. During the biggest Christmas event in Brazil, Natal Luz, Major Nicoletti Square receives a very special decoration. And at night it becomes even more beautiful thanks to the lighting that decorates the entire city.
In its surroundings there are many stores, restaurants, and cafes that are an invitation to take a break and enjoy a hot chocolate in the winter, or a cold beer in the summer, and appreciate all the movement that happens there. Especially on weekends, it is common to see people sitting on the benches of the square, drinking mate tea (a typical gaucho drink) that is shared among friends, and enjoying one of the best views of the city.
